Botswana: It's Happy Times With Kabelano

Francistown — Premier League champions Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Township Rollers, Notwane and Ecco City Greens were on Tuesday drawn to play in the Orange Kabelano Charity Cup next month.

The draw, held at the Gaborone Sun, also included Gaborone United and Extension Gunners whose supporters will surely curse the ill luck that saw their heroes miss the chance to take part in the country's most prestigious and lucrative one day football and music extravaganza.

Run by the Kabelano Trust, the Orange Charity Cup has donated more than P1.4 million to different charities since 1995.

Speaking at the draw, Orange Botswana Public Relations Manager, Karabo Tlhabiwe, said that his company, who are the main sponsors of the event, is proud to be associated with the initiative to help the less fortunate.

"Orange Botswana is committed to reaching the disadvantage through drives such as these."

For his part, Kabelano Trust Chairman, Terrence Dambe, said the trust remains grateful to the nation for supporting the Orange Kabelano Charity Cup over the years:

"We cannot thank Batswana enough for the support they continue to give us for this event. While many attend the event to have a good time, it is good to know that charity is the ultimate beneficiary of the revenues raised," Dambe said.

This is a winner takes all tournament. This year's Kabelano winners, therefore, will pocket a P100 00.00. The runners up will receive a P30 000.00 appearance fee whilst the bottom two will each pocket P20 000.

The fans will also have their share of prizes in an exciting SMS competition that will see them winning prizes from Orange Botswana with the ultimate prize being a weekend for two at Sun City.

While the fans of the loosing teams may be sore, observers have expressed delight at this year's draw.

Sports journalist, Fundi Galeforwe, commented: "This is a good draw and I think it will bring crowds to the stadium. All I can do is appeal to other teams to encourage their supporters to attend the games. Kabelano is getting better every year and I have a feeling this year's will be the best ever."

Chiefs Public Relations Officer, Clifford Mogotsi, sees the charity cup as a chance for his club to continue their winning ways.

"The draw is mouth watering for us. I am happy with the teams and see nothing stopping us from winning it. I do not see any of these teams beating us. I am also confident that these clubs will help us fill the stadium," he told Voice Sport.

Notwane PRO, Cyrus Mogashoa, believes the draw is the beginning of good things for his club that is staring the relegation in the face with only two games to go before the end of the season.

"I think this draw is a sign that our fortunes are changing and the Kabelano Charity cup will save our season. After all, we are the defending champions and intend to keep the trophy for another year,' said Mogashoa.
