Students who are constructing a road as part of a learnership programme are to be visited by the Eastern Cape Transport MEC Thobile Mhlahlo.
The MEC is to inspect the progress being made on the road between Jansenville and Kliplaat as well as the how the pupils are enjoying being part of the programme. The 54 pupils have passed the first phase of the programme which included the post planning and pre-construction of the road.
The department's Expanded Public Works Programme [EPWP] and learnership programme has managed to assist students with bursaries to study in various construction fields.
"These learners have passed NQF Level 1, which was mostly a combination of planning, post planning and pre-construction phase of the road between Jansenville and Kliplaat," the department said in a statement said.
The actual construction phase started in April 2006 and will be completed in May next.
Department of Transport spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca said 45 construction posts have already been created in various fields to help the students.
"We have already identified small contracts that will be carried out or simulated by these contractors as will be provided training.
"We hope that by the end of the contract we can give small aspects of road construction to these contractors," Mr Kumbaca said.
He said local people, including women and youth were trained through the project in sewing and they were now providing all the workers with protective clothing.
Some of the residents have converted their homes into lodging facilities to accommodate some of the department staff members.
Other locals are trained in various fields such as fencing, brick making and bricklaying, culvert laying and bridge construction.
In April, the department announced it would spend R100 million on reconstructing the province's roads during this financial year. -
Bollywood show set to come to SA <mailto:mohauram@mpg.gov.za>

Johannesburg - After performing more than 400 shows in the United Kingdom and Australia, the cast of The Merchants of Bollywood is bringing its energetic performances to Johannesburg.
Featuring 40 dancers, singers and actors from the Indian film city of Mumbai, The Merchants of Bollywood is based on the real life story of the show's choreographer, Vaibhavi Bhavi Merchant, according to the city's official website.
A musical in the all-singing, all-dancing, glamorous Bollywood tradition, it is about Ayesha Merchant and her grandfather Shabtilal Merchant, and the inevitable clash of generations and ambition.
Both Ayesha and her grandfather are choreographers, but their approaches to their craft are very different.
The elder Merchant wants to carry on with the family responsibility of upholding the ancient traditions of the Kathak dance, or the dance of the gods; Ayesha wishes to become the queen of choreography in modern Bollywood.
After a long and bitter dispute, Ayesha returns home to the heart of India, to make peace with her grandfather. In India, tears are shed, old wounds are healed, old conflicts are resolved and old enemies are reconciled.
It is the show's first visit to South Africa and the producer, Mark Brady, is excited about performing here.
Over the years there has been a significant growth in the number of people showing interest in Bollywood films, he says.
"Bollywood is growing to outshine and outgrow Hollywood. It is actually quite interesting that a lot of Hollywood producers are now starting to set up their studios in Bollywood and many Bollywood producers are setting up their studios in Hollywood."
Merchant family members are involved in the choreography. According to the associate choreographer, Shruti Merchant, Vaibhavi Bhavi Merchant's sister, there have been over 400 performances in the United Kingdom and Australia.
"The show has been going on for about three years now, but we try to update it by introducing new dance routines and add a scene or two so that it remains fresh."
She says that the musical is close to her heart as it tells the story of her family, adding that they have tried as much as possible to stick to the truth.

The Merchants of Bollywood is at Montecasino's Teatro on 24, 25, 30 and 31 May.
