Two senior officers of the National Social Security Fund were Tuesday fined Sh300,000 each for being in contempt of a court order.

Also cited for the same offence is a contractor who was ordered by Mombasa Judge Joseph Sergon to pay a similar amount .

Judge Sergon was delivering a ruling in a case in which the NSSF board of directors had been sued by Sifa International Limited.

The judge ordered Mr Said Chitembwe, who is the NSSF corporation secretary; Ms Rachael Lumbasyo, the corporation's managing trustee; and Mr J. K. Muchina, a contractor trading as Kajos Enterprises, to pay the money within seven days.

Failure would see them being jailed for three months.

The judge also directed that the matter be mentioned on May 27, 2008.

The plaintiffs had filed the case after the three parties raided their premises, Camper's Haven in Bamburi, last year while an injunction issued in 2006 by the court barring any interference was still in place.

NSSF allegedly sent its officers, together with a delegation of prospective buyers, and forcefully entered the place on January 20, 2007.

In another case, a public officer has been charged in a Mombasa court with corruption.

Suleiman Salim Aboud, an artisan with Kenya Power and Lighting Company, was charged with soliciting and receiving a bribe, contrary to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

Solicited for bribe

On May 8, Mr Aboud is said to have solicited for a bribe of Sh30,000 from Christopher Charles Bird in Likoni.

The bribe was to facilitate the restoration of electricity supplies which had been cut off as a tree that was being trimmed by Mr Bird's employee fell. On May 15, Mr Aboud is also said to have solicited for a Sh16,000 bribe from Mr Bird for having restored the power.
