Nigeria: Lagos Assembly Approves N792 Million for LG Salaries

Lagos Assembly has approved the payment of N792.4 million for the payment of arrears of salaries of Local Government workers.The bill, which went through its third reading yesterday at the plenary session of the House got the full support of members that were present at the sitting.

The amount is to be issued out of the State's local government joint account from the fund received from the Federation account for the benefit of the local government councils in the state.

The amount will also be used as payment of arrears of salaries and severance allowances of public office holders that served between the years 2004 and 2007 in the 20 local governments and the 37 local council development areas in the state.

In a related development, the House has ordered payment of outstanding statutory entitlements to former political holders between 1999-2002 in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area.

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of the report on a petition brought against the executive secretary of Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, Taofeek Adaranijo by councilors of the area.Presenting the report before the House, Chairman, House Committee on Local Government Administration, Hon. Adelabu Onibiyo said the payment of outstanding statutory entitlements to the officials should be effected without any delay.

In the report, the executive secretary admitted having withdraw his entitlement to a balance of N377,000 while others are yet to collect theirs ranging from N1,251,000 to N2,748,186.
