Namibia: Hospital Thieves Add Insult to Injury

Windhoek — BURGLARS who broke into the Katutura State Hospital's pharmacy over the weekend not only stole a refrigerator but also defecated on the floor.

When hospital staff reported for duty on Sunday morning, they discovered that the pharmacy's refrigerator was gone.

The fridge was the only item missing, but hospital spokesperson Manga Libita said yesterday that a number of computers had been unplugged, and plastic bags were found next to them.

The most baffling aspect of the burglary was a pile of human faeces left on the pharmacy floor.

"We don't understand it really," Libita told The Namibian.

She said the Police did not find any fingerprints on the crime scene, which could mean that the thieves had used gloves.

There was also no evidence of a forcible entry, she said.

"The window through which patients are handed their medication was opened, but given the length and width of the fridge, it may not have fitted through there.

They may have just opened the window to make it seem like that was their entry point," she said.

That the robbery was an inside job is a strong possibility, she confirmed.

She said the last staff left the pharmacy at around noon on Saturday, which meant that the crime was committed sometime between then and early Sunday morning.
