Nigeria: Nine-Man C'ttee to Monitor Ekiti LG Polls

Ado-Ekiti-Ekiti State Goverment has constituted a nine-member consultative committee drawn from all the registered political parties in the state and interest groups that would liaise and monitor the State Independent Electoral commission (SIEC), on the conduct of the council election.

Governor Segun Oni announced this in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, when members of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), led by its chairman, Chief Tunde Agbabiaka, paid him a courtesy visit.

Oni said two members of the committee would be drawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress (AC), while a member each would come from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the state Council of Traditional Rulers and the Muslim Society.

The committee, would according to him, have the reponsibility of liasing and monitoring SIEC so as to put it on a right track.

The governor, however, assured the CNPP members that his government would not manipulate the local council elections.

"It is in the interest of Ekiti that things have to change and let me make it clear once again that government has no intention of manipulating the local government elections.

"It is also important that we further improve on public confidence and allay the people's fear and for this, we are putting in place a nine-member consultative committee

Earlier, CNPP chairman, Mr. Tunde Agbabiaka, had commended the governor for his people-oriented programmes, noting that CNPP members were happy that the government follows due process.

The CNPP members who had earlier visited the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), to express their willingness to participate in the forthcoming local government elections congratulated Governor Oni for the effective management of the state's affairs.

"We hasten to congratulate you and your cabinet members on the effective management of Ekiti affairs. We are happy to note that you follow due process in the governance of Ekiti.

"This is commendable. Besides this, we are aware of your desire to employ about four thousand of our youths, you cater for the aged through prompt payment of outstanding gratuity and pension, the infirmed are not left out through your well thought-out and painstakingly executed health programme for our people.
