THE UPDF will spend a whopping sh1b to prepare for and host the two-week East Africa Defence Forces Culture and Sports games starting June 24. The budget is the third biggest that has been tabled by sports associations in the last one year.

Makerere University and the African University Sports Federation require sh6b for the All Africa University Games due in July at Makerere.

Local football governing body, FUFA, has budgeted for sh1.4b for the 2010 African Nations and World Cup qualifiers that start on May 31.

But unlike FUFA and Makerere, who hope to raise the money from fundraising drives, UPDF sports director Major Godfrey Muwanguzi said yesterday that they already had the sh1bn in place.

The budget will cater for training of Ugandan teams as well as internal transport and accommodation for all participating teams, and trophies and medals. More than 100 participants from Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and hosts Uganda are expected to take part.
