Nigeria: Dream Team Hits Semis

22 May 2008

Lagos — John Owoeri converted a late penalty to help Dream Team IV edge past Iraq 1-0 and confirm their place in the semifinals of the Intercontinental Cup in Malaysia yesterday.

The penalty was won by Charlton Athletic starlet Daniel Uchechi deep into stoppage time, after the Nigerians were guilty of squandering a host of opportunities to put the game to bed.

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia was left unhappy by his players' profligacy.

"As a striker myself, I know how it is to score. But if you don't score, I don't know what else can we do. The problem lies with the linkage between midfield and the strike force," Siasia said on the Malaysia FA site after the game.

"This tournament gives me the chance to take a closer look at players whom I've never worked with and Charlton-based Uchechi is a case in point.

Nigeria will now play Chile in the semifinals.
