In its determination to safeguard the creative ingenuity of Nigerians, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation is going into partnership with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

This is through the initiation of a robust copyright legislation and activities that will guarantee economic returns for owners of intellectual property rights.

Speaking at the 2008 world culture day in Abuja yesterday, the minister of culture, tourism and national orientation, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, said this is due to the fact that cultural industries are mainly intellectual property based.

He said the essence of the celebration is to redefine and reposition the Nigerian culture to reflect global best cultural practices such as using culture as a mechanism for establishing not only a knowledge based society.

The celebration, he continued, can also be used to advance the frontiers of the country's civilisation with Nigeria placed among the best twenty economies in the world come 2020.

According to him, cultural industries cover a large gamut of human endeavour in Nigeria which if well harnessed, can create jobs for millions of photographers, printers, designers, fashion creators, artists, film makers, crafts men and women, musicians and traditional sportsmen.

"This year's world culture day specifically offers us the opportunity to critically assess the challenges facing Nigeria when we consider the globalisation onslaught and its pulverising effects on African culture, tradition, language, values and ethics", he emphasised.

He said this is against the backdrop of such challenges as underdevelopment, consolidation of democratic principles, strengthening of cultural and democratic institutions in Africa and attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) among others.

"For us in the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, our focus is to utilise the opportunities to create jobs for Nigerians by developing our cultural industries as well as our national festivals which are key to sustainable tourism development in Nigeria", Kayode pointed out.
