House of Representatives Committee on Defence has lamented the lack of attention paid to the Army Special Vehicle Plant (AVP) in Bauchi, saying the development has negatively set the country back in terms of manufacturing of heavy duty vehicles and equipment. It said this is needed the growth of the country's military as was the case in other parts of the world, promising that it will definitely look into the problem and make the place functional again.

Speaking shortly after inspecting the plant in Bauchi, the committee chairman, Hon.Oluwole Oke expressed worry over the non utilisation of the special vehicle plant which was conceived with the intention of refurbishing military vehicles in the country blaming the development on the lack of proper funding by the federal government.

Hon Oke further lamented that the plant had suffered set back in the past due to lack of proper maintenance and inadequate funding. He said the use of the vehicle plant would have saved the nation foreign exchange which is being used in importing and refurbishing the vehicles abroad.

He however advised that the plant should not be left out to die adding that "we must not allow our generation to be a wasted one, so we must assist the plant both in law and funding because the major problem confronting the plant is funding, as there is no need for the nation to spend huge sums of money buying new ones when such vehicles could be refurbished in Bauchi.

According to him, the committee's mission to Bauchi is to see how it could assist in reviving the Special Vehicle Plant, look into their problems with a view of finding solutions as well as adding value to the plant.
