The Nyanga Arts Festival roars into life today, with expectations high that the event will be a rare treat for music and art lovers in this mountainous town.

The event, which coincides with Culture Week commemorations, is expected to showcase various cultural activities that include music, poetry, drama and traditional dance.

For three days, the mountains will vibrate to the sounds of different beats and sounds that will range from mbira, hosho, the beating drums and ululation from the local community that is expected to come out in full force in support of works by their own.

Locals will also have an opportunity to watch different films that will be screened as part of the festival.

Some of the highlights of the festival include a beauty pageant, a live cultural music show, dinner dance and a sculpture exhibition that will run for the duration of the festival.

Micro-Project Holders Community Trust, one of the organisers of the event, said the main objective of the event was to generate an appreciation of upcoming artists within the region and also showcase Nyanga as a competitive tourism destination, rich in cultural heritage and diversity.

The Trust's secretary, Victor Gwekwerere, said the festival would present locals with an opportunity to marvel and appreciate talent from their own environs, while marketing the town as a must-visit tourist destination.

"Talent is abundant in the community, something that the community and our visitors will come to appreciate during the festival.

"It is also our hope that while we generate an appreciation of what we have in terms of cultural heritage, we also market our area," he said.
