President Koroma's effort to restore electricity to the country has received a big boost from Japanese government which is ready to dole out a grant of 1 billion, 651 million Yen for urgent improvement in Freetown.

This was disclosed to Concord Times yesterday by Sierra Leone's Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Osman Yansaneh after meeting with Japan's charge d'affaires and deputy head of mission also accredited to Ghana, Yutaka Nakamura.

The meeting, he said, was in order to "further strengthen bilateral relations." According to a press release issued after the meeting held to exchange 'notes' on Japanese economic cooperation with the country, Japan "shall extend to the government of the Republic of Sierra Leone, in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of Japan, a grant of 1 billion, 651 million Yen." This, Ambassador Yansaneh said, was meant for the purpose of contributing further to the execution of the electric power project by Japan.

The grant, according to the envoy will be available in two periods with the first 119 million Yen, "between the date of coming into force of the present arrangement and March 31, 2009." The second grant is expected between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010.
