Sierra Leone: ADB, Health Ministry to Improve Healthcare

The African Development Bank (ADB) strengthening district health service project management team and the ministry of health and sanitation (MOHS) are fighting to improve the healthcare delivery services in the country.
During a two-day sensitization drive in Mattru Jong and Kebbie Town in the Bonthe and Bo districts respectively acting UNFPA implementing procurement specialist Dr. Peter Sikana said the project would improve the health status of the people by providing them support for the attainment of the MDGs.
He added that people in Tonkolili, Port Loko and Kenema districts would also have access to quality healthcare which would complement government's efforts in fighting maternal and infant mortality rate.
Dr. Sikana said it was important to fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, stating that the three project components would address the rehabilitation of five district maternity wards and 25 healthcare posts in the five districts, providing training opportunities consultancy services.
District Medical Officer Bo Dr Samuel Moses Steven said 2008 is God's appointed time for the successful implementation of the project which has been on the pipeline since 2005.
He advocated for specialized training programmes, provision of equipment and drugs, more donor funding and NGO partnership.
Stakeholders, health staff and the community including the district and local council representatives expressed gratitude and appreciation to ADB for the provision of the grant and MOHS for their efforts to make available quality and accessible healthcare delivery service countrywide.

The sensitization ended with the formation of a ten-man working committee for the successful implementation of the project.
