National secretary general of the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) has said his association was not a church but rather a storehouse used to help young men, children, women and the elders.

Christian Martyn Kamara was speaking at a one day media training workshop held at YMCA's headquarters on Fort Street in Freetown when he observed that the purpose of the training was to sensitize the media on the role of the association.

He said the association was assisting needy areas in Freetown like Kroo Bay community with improved sanitation and by building community centres to help generate money to develop poor communities.

Kamara added that YMCA was operating in schools and universities, with more than one thousand members across the country.

"The association has built schools, conducted HIV/AIDS campaign programmes and a farming project," he said.

Chairperson of the workshop Gil Harper said YMCA has been doing very good work in the country, including giving out scholarships to deserving students and training youth to become self reliant.

He said the association aims to have journalists tell stories about the work they have done and what should be done to help the association do more.
