Liberia: Ellen On Budget Performance Report

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has urged members of the National Legislature to carefully look at the fiscal budget for 2008/09, which was submitted to that August body last Tuesday.

The President expressed the support of the executive in cooperating with the consultation processes, by working and make itself available before the relevant committees from the national legislature that would need information on the budget before it is pass.

The President, who was addressing Executive Mansion reporters Tuesday on a wide range of national issues shortly after the Bureau of the Budget submitted the fiscal budget for 2008/09 to the national legislature, admitted that the executive is yet to submit to the lawmakers the performance report of the last fiscal budget as is required by law.

President Sirleaf who alluded to the fact that the lawmakers would request for the last performance report of the fiscal budget, said the report is now being finalize by the Ministry of Finance and by next week, her office would get it to the lawmakers.

The President recognized the fact that indeed, it is necessary to make the submission because as she put, the lawmakers needs to know how the government spent money allotted in the last budget; what were the accomplishments of the government as the basis to determine the government proposal in the current fiscal budget of 2008/09.

Last Tuesday, the Executive through the Bureau of Budget submitted to the National Legislature a draft budget in the tune of US$276, 767,955 for the fiscal year 2008/09.

The proposed budget represent an increase of 38.8% over the last budget, which was US$199.4, and begin from July 1, 2008 to June 3oyh, 2009.

There are lot of allocations to government's ministries and agencies in the current budget, but education carried the largest amount in the tune of US$27.1 representing 9.8% excluding other allotments to the sector.
