23 May 2008

Harare — GOVERNMENT will redouble its efforts in uplifting the quality of education in rural schools through building proper learning infrastructure, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Cde Obert Matshalaga, has said.

Speaking during a ceremony where a donation of $75 billion by the Lotteries and Gaming Board was made to Kaseke Primary School in Murehwa on Wednesday, Cde Matshalaga said Government established the Lotteries and Gaming Board as part of its efforts to raise

funds to improve worthy causes such as educational development.

"The fund is a useful reservoir for addressing social construction and public welfare needs," Cde Matshalaga said.

He said since independence Government has worked hard to provide quality education hence the country boasts of the highest literacy rate in Africa.

"This is also consistent with the priority the Zanu-PF Government has placed in the provision of education since 1980," he said.

The Lotteries and Gaming Board donated the money towards the construction of a classroom block.

Cde Matshalaga said Government would continue to partner with the school to electrify, repair and develop the school. The newly elected House of Assembly member for the area, Cde Simbarashe Mudarikwa, also donated $30 billion, 20 bags of cement, vegetable seeds and fertilizer.

"I have donated fertilizer and vegetable seeds for the school to utilise the land, a heritage that cannot be sold to the British by voting for the opposition," he said.
