Harare — Music lovers were in for a treat on Thursday when a Norwegian group, Trio Arctic performed classical and folk music at the Zimbabwe College of Music.
The fusion of trumpets, saxophones, drums and the piano was such a rare combination that the audience were at loss for words as the threesome led them to the ninth cloud.
The trio comprising of Eyvind Helsetch, Linda Helsetch and Tone Sovik backed by acclaimed pianist Jeanette Micklem, had the crowd in awe of their work as they kicked off the show with an emotive performance of the piece Pictures that was originally done by Jan Inge Noksnes, a connoisseur of classical music. The group which was formed sometime in February this year also impressed classical music lovers at the just ended prestigious Harare Festival of Arts (Hifa) that was held last month.
Tone Sovik, one of the group members marvelled at the Zimbabwean culture and how they had been enjoying their stay in Zimbabwe. "Since we came to Zimbabwe, we have managed to exchange cultures and we have learnt a lot about the Zimbabwean culture and at the same time we have managed to impart our own way of life to them, basically it is quite an exciting experience," said Tone.
The trio showed their range as they alternated tunes for both the feet and for the heart. The height of the show was when the ensemble got together for a power packed collaboration with Nqobile Khoza and Malvern Potwayo from the Umoja Action team with the piece Ndendende, that celebrated their shared roots. The group topped of the show with a sterling performance that set the bowl alight with the piece Inspiration that literally had people clapping and tapping their feet in tune to the rhythm.
It was a climatic way to end an absolutely exhilarating performance and it was clear that the audience was impressed as they grinned and applauded the curtsying artists.
The group is set to embark on a tour to Mozambique where they are going to perform and will also have a show at Theatre in the Park.
