The coming of the Internet to our society today has become a source of livelihood for many Cameroonians through the diverse opportunities it offers.

It is commonplace today to find young Cameroonians in cyber cafés glued to computer screens hoping to find jobs, business opportunities, marriages, etc. Since the inauguration of the media centre in two Government High Schools in Yaounde in 2000, the government has ensured that many government high schools especially in provincial headquarters have multimedia centres.

One of the major contents of the Internet is information. The Internet can also be used as a library. Teachers and students go to the Internet to collect information for studies and also for research. The Internet improves and facilitates training. Internet provides different types of training. These are training on site, which is basically the information teachers, students, etc get from the internet. Online learning is the type of training through the Internet. Most post- graduate courses are done through the Internet. This method of training reduces expenditure.

The candidate pays only the cost of training. There are also online jobs. It provides employment opportunities and job resources. There are many job offers these days which are basically from the Internet. The candidate sends his profile and can even be interviewed online. Some people can work for Microsoft online wherever they are and they are paid. The webmaster that takes care of the site is also a new job offer by the Internet. The Internet is the most common Information Communication Technologies (ICT) that has come into the world but it has brought many other things. Socially, it reaches persons every where as a result it reduces the cost of sending documents.

The Internet is also a tool for business and development. The creation of telecentres in the country is also another opportunity from the internet. The government is introducing telecentres throughout the national territory as a way of getting access to the Internet. Today, Cameroon has some 30 telecentres operating in the country and some 100 telecentres are already under construction. The objective is to attain close to 2000 telecentres in the country by 2015 to attain the millennium development goals. Internet also helps in the development of telemedicine. Presently a pilot centre for telemedicine has been opened in the Yaounde Central Hospital.
