The General Manager of the United Bank for Africa, UBA Cameroon, Emeke E. Iweriebor, has declared that the bank will strive to contribute actively to the development of the Cameroonian economy.
He made this promise on May 14 in Douala during a press briefing, which also served as the first official contact between the top management of the bank and the Cameroon media men and women.
The General Manager disclosed that the bank intends to, among other things, democratize banking services, bank the "unbanked and underbanked", provide banking solutions adapted to the needs of customers, make banking services accessible and affordable to all, as well as identify and envisage the needs of customers and even exceed their expectations.
Iweriebor added that UBA Cameroon will also deliver quality services or products that meet and ultimately satisfy the needs and expectations of customers, as well as continuously invest in technology to improve service delivery and customer satisfaction.
As to the birth of UBA Cameroon, the General Manager noted that the bank with headquarters located at Boulevard de la Liberté at Akwa, Douala, got its license in August 2007 and effectively commenced operations last December.
Iweriebor was happy to note that the less than one-year-old bank, still to be officially launched, is already experiencing rapid growth.UBA Cameroon already counts five branches located in Yaounde, Bamenda, Bafoussam and Douala (two branches). It presently operates as an embedded bank in other parts of the country, where branches are still to be created.
Talking about the UBA Group, Iweriebor disclosed that UBA Plc started business in Nigeria way back in 1961. It took over the assets and liabilities of the British and French Bank Limited; a former subsidiary of Banque Nationale de Paris, BNP, which had carried out business in Nigeria since 1949.
Today, the UBA Group is said to be the largest financial services institution in West Africa.
"UBA Plc is a bank with a balance sheet of plus contingent in excess of $ 13 billion, and more than 6 million customer accounts operating in Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Uganda), America (New York, Cayman Island) and Europe (England). Global expansion plans include sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Asia," said Iweriebor.
As for the strength of the Group, Iweriebor was optimistic.
Said he: "Our strength as a group lies primarily in our diverse people and their limitless capacity to bring their passion to bear on the development and delivery of innovative products and services, creation of excellent customers experience and delivery of results.
"Also, UBA is said to have as mission, "to be the role model for African businesses by creating superior value for all stakeholders, abiding by up most professional and ethical standards and building an enduring institution". The bank is said to have as vision to be the undisputed leading and dominant financial services institution in Africa. To all these, UBA has a slogan to march: "Africa's global bank."
Answering the question why the UBA Group has decided to invest in a Cameroon when other foreign business investors are instead running away, because of the country's unfriendly business environment, the General Manager said, "We are an African bank and we cannot run away from home. That is why we are different."
He insisted that no matter the condition or situation in Africa, it is naïve for Africans to think of running away to where they consider developed. Iweriebor argued that Africa can only be developed by Africans and that people will not have to come from other continents to develop Africa for Africans.
He said Europe or the US which are today considered by many Africans as paradise on earth, developed because the people braved all the challenges and worked hard to develop them.

The General Manager said as an African bank, UBA is determined to work relentlessly to make its own humble contributions to the development of the economies of African countries, especially in countries where it is established.
We Appreciated the Article on UBA, we are many that believe on the say of the General Manager or Director General of UBA Cameroun, we had in the past operated account with UBA in former Gongola State in Nigeria ,in Borno State and in Present Anambra State for some of us. We are therefore happy and eager to work with UBA here in Cameroon, we appeal to the management to do well and Start even unofficial operation in our region such cities as Garoua and Kousseri where we are confident we could boost the Bank's Operation with ours contacts and... I am very happy that the UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA is now implanted in Cameroon. As one who studied in Nigeria,i have been opportuned to see how planted the bank is in Nigeria. As the General Manager UBA Cameroon rightly said,UBA is the biggest bank in Africa south of the sahara. More greese to your elbows.
"Democritize banking services, bank the unbanked and the underbanked" and saying these words with a lot of confidence indicates that the General Manager means businss in Cameroon. It also implies that UBA has identified the problems of most Africans and is bent on solving them. Going by these declarations and puting words into action, I predict it will not be long before UBA takes over leadeship in banking activities in Cameroon.
I have in the past commented over this article, suprisingly I was called on my mobile phone around the 05th of current month by some one using MTN 75299999 and claiming to be the General Manager of UBA congratulating me or thanking me for my comment, suggesting that we meet in Douala for further discussion, I was pleased by that and promise to honour the Invitation soon as I return from the journey I was planning, but what baffled me is that while on my journey and even when I return to the country any time I call the said...
