Rwanda: President Kagame in Vietnam

President Paul Kagame Friday arrived in Hanoi at the beginning of a three-day official visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and was received by President Nguyen Minh Triet at an official welcoming ceremony at the Hanoi Presidential Palace.

During official talks that followed the welcome ceremony, the two Heads of State reiterated the strong ties of cooperation and friendship between Rwanda and Vietnam and expressed the need to further strengthen links.

Both presidents briefed each other on the progress made by their two countries especially in overcoming the difficult challenges of rebuilding the social, economic and political structures after the genocide in Rwanda and the war in Vietnam respectively.

Kagame congratulated Nguyen on the remarkable achievements made by Vietnam in the last twenty years, particularly the country's success at combating poverty and rapid economic development.

"We in Africa and in Rwanda in particular have followed with great interest what this country has achieved in a short period using your own unique reforms of "renovation," he said.

Both Presidents expressed satisfaction with the excellent bilateral cooperation but pointed out the need explore opportunities to enhance trade relations between Rwanda and Vietnam.

They witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements between their governments in the areas of agriculture, healthcare and education.

The President also met separately with the Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dzung at the Government's Office.

President Kagame was later hosted by President Nguyen to a State Banquet and cultural concert held at the Government Guest House in Hanoi.

In his remarks at the banquet President Kagame pointed out that Vietnam's success was a source of inspiration for Rwanda and other African countries, and thanked the government of Vietnam for its generous offer of support to the development of key sectors well as trade and investment in Rwanda.

Kagame is scheduled to tour an agricultural research institute and an industrial park in Hanoi Saturday.
