Nigeria: Man Arraigned for Forgery, Impersonation

One Kingsley Obola, of no fixed address, has been arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) magistrate's court holding at Wuse Zone 6, Abuja for alleged criminal conspiracy, forgery, using as genuine forged documents, criminal intimidation, cheating and breach of trust contrary to sections 97, 364, 366, 397, 322 and 312 of the penal code.

The prosecutor, SP Ibrahim Bako, stated that on October 18, 2007, two petitions written by one Hajiya Adenike Lawal, founder of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), National Support for Yar'Adua and Jonathan for presidency with head office at no. 10 Jos Street, Area 3, Garki, Abuja; and the other by General Buba Marwa (retd) were received by the Inspector- General of police.

That Kingsley Obolo, the accused on or about the month of May 2007 allegedly conspired with one Chief Ogbuefi, now at large and impersonated the founder of the said NGO and forged her signature, and that of General Marwa (retd), a patron of the NGO.

They consequently wrote factitious letters to several individuals with intent to defraud them according to the police report, police investigations revealed that the accused conspired with the other accused at large, and fraudulently and dishonestly used as genuine the fictitious letters which the accused allegedly forged and collected the sum of N15,000 for registration fees from unsuspecting victims.

Another N15,000 each from unsuspecting victims to illegally appoint state coordinator, from all the states of the federation. Also, another N70,000 each to illegally appoint state women leaders.

The accused used forged documents and signatures of Alhaji Adenike and General Marwa (retd) to write a fictitious letter to the inspector-general of police with intent to defraud and or mislead him.

Attempt by the NGO to investigate the crimes were met with serious threats.

However, the accused denied the allegations before Chief magistrate Sunday Ochimana, who denied him of bail and mandated him to be kept in police custody. Hearing on the case was adjourned to June 17, 2008.
