Harare — After producing legendary sungura musicians for a long time, Chitungwiza has given birth to a promising DJ, with a passion to promote Zimbabwean music.
Tatenda "DJ Smash TC" Chiunye has made nightspots enjoyable in Chitungwiza with his unique touch of music.
Usually a resident DJ at a nightclub in Zengeza 4, DJ Smash has managed to make his music selection appeal across age and taste barriers.
Still in his teens, DJ Smash seems to have done enough research for patrons, as his music is never the same when he plays hip-hop, Rhythm and Blues, kwaito and even sungura.
Unlike many DJs who take alcohol and smoke, DJ Smash just has a passion for music and neither drinks nor smokes.
When he talks, the young man is jittery and one can tell that he lacks confidence but when he is spinning the wheel, everything changes as he puts revellers in a partying mood.
"Well dee-jaying has been something that is within me.
"I have a strong passion for music and I believe I have strength in my ability to accommodate different genres.
"This alone is a strength that has enabled me over the years to entertain fans cutting across age and tastes," DJ Smash said.
The young DJ said he tried his hand at wheel spinning when he was in Form Two and through the passage of time he improved in his work.
"I started making my collection of music when I was still in Form Two and I would be invited to be DJ at school variety shows and modelling competitions. That made me gain confidence."
DJ Smash believes Zimbabwe has various music genres, which appeal to both young and the old, although there were certain areas that artists needed to improve. This included the co-ordination of lyrics in the case of urban groovers.
He expressed confidence in local music, saying it continued to improve.
The young DJ hopes to share the stage with renowned DJs like Tich Mataz, Witness Matema and many others who have made their marks on the local scene.
"It is my desire to brush shoulders with the likes of Tich Mataz and Witness Matema among others in the near future."
