Mauritania: Journalist Briefly Detained

Errabi Ould Idoumou, journalist with the Sahara Media, an independent Mauritanian media and communications agency, was on May 27, 2008, arrested by the Gendarmerie and detained for thirty minutes at a Nouakchott court.

No reasons were given for his arrest.

Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)'s correspondent reported that Idoumou was covering a case involving 40 suspected terrorists at a Nouakchott court. At the time of his arrest he was taking pictures of the suspects.

Idoumou was detained within the court's premises alongside the suspects.

After half an hour in detention he was brought before the Deputy State Prosecutor who ordered the journalist's immediate and unconditional release.
