Chairman of the regional bloc ECOWAS and President of Burkina Faso Friday held consultations with presidents in the subregion on the deteriorating situation in Guinea at the close of the TICAD IV conference in Yokohama, Japan.

Blaise Compaoré urged John Kufuor of Ghana, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria and President of the ECOWAS Commission Dr.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas to act now.

Disgruntled Guinean soldiers recently revolted over pay heightening fears of wider unrest in the country following President Lansana Conte's surprise sacking of a consensus prime minister; a decision that infuriated opposition unions and political parties.

Analysts observed that Guinea's hasty attempt to grant the demands of mutinous soldiers ending a two-day civil disobedience over back pay could weaken their authority to manage political and economic pressures in a country that risk a 'coup d'etat.' However, the BBC reporter in Freetown Umaru Fofana, versed in regional politics, has however dismissed the possibility of a coup but admitted that there might continue to be a series of such political and economic unrests largely due to external influence.

Meanwhile, the heads of state expressed great concern about reported unrest by elements of the armed forces of Guinea which put at risk the safety and security of the civilian population and poses a grave threat to the fragile peace in the entire Mano River Union area.

They appealed to all Guineans to act with a high sense of responsibility and to desist from any actions likely to plunge their country and its neighbours into conflict and instability.
