Botswana: Skill And Flair Won't Save Swallows

Despite displaying good skill and flair, Kanye Swallows bowed out of the Coca-Cola Cup on Sunday after losing 4-1 on penalties to Danger Chiefs in the preliminaries of the lucrative cup at the Siga grounds.

Swallows had the upper hand for the entire first half and even looked the better side in the first 30 minutes of the second stanza but faded badly to allow their opponents back into the game.

Swallows' Dipuo 'Dipsy' Kodume opened the scoring in the 37th minute after receiving a good pass from Keaoboka Modisaotsile. The nippy Kodume had been a menace to the opposition defence, creating havoc with his speed and skill on the right flank and it came as no surprise when he flashed the ball home. The game, which was the last of the three played at the venue on the day, was by far the best with the Kanye side clearly on a rampage. But the man, who would have received the Coca Cola 'Most Exciting' Player award, if there was any, was Makgoa Tlhokile.

He was definitely going to wreak much havoc if his team had progressed further. A skilful left winger, Tlhokile easily outwitted his markers.

The skinny Tlhokile gave the fans just what they had been waiting for and unlike Kodume who combined skill and pace to beat defenders, he seemed to enjoy displaying his ball-juggling skills, thereby arousing cheers even from opposition supporters.

It looked as if Swallows were destined for the next stage until the 62nd minute when one of their defenders brought down Kenalemodisa Ntesang inside the penalty box. Ntesang rose up to make it 1-1.

That goal just spurred the Mogoditshane side into better action as they started to dominate, especially in the midfield hence Tlhokile found himself with less time to apply his magic.

Swallows played the last 15 minutes under pressure trying to regain the lead, but found the opponents' defence in a mean mood.

Nametsegang Simane, in Chiefs' goal, had been showing a lot of confidence throughout the match and it was obvious he was charged up for the penalty kicks. With the two sides deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Simane got the chance to show what he is made of during the spot kicks.

He confidently took the first kick and scored but his heroics did not end there, he went on to save two more penalties while his team mates scored the other two to finish the match at 4-1.

After trailing 1-0 for almost an hour, Chiefs were worthy winners although some people could argue that Swallows' good display should have helped them to register an out right victory.

The weekend's biggest disappointment was Mochudi-based First Division South side Eastern Tigers who bowed out of the tournament after losing 8-7 to Bolux FC on penalties. They drew 1-1 during the 90 minutes. In another match, Moamogedi Thatogo struck twice against Tlokweng-based Liverpool as Green Birds of Mmopane registered a 2-1 win to progress to the next stage. Thatogo scored the quickest goal just 45 seconds after kick-off to lighten up an otherwise dull afternoon.
