Cameroon: Incubators Made In Bamenda

Regina Liengu Etaka

3 June 2008

Most incubators in the country are manufactured in Europe and America. But 24-year-old Aghangu Kamfu Herman is about to make history with a local initiative that shouts. The young man from Momo division is the producer of a local incubator that is effective.

Aghangu's product uses solar energy and electricity. The local incubator is already tried and tested in the Bamenda General Hospital where it is used for premature babies and a phototherapy to take care of children suffering from jaundice. The rare product is made of wood, and plastic glasses.

Aghangu himself take credit with barely a CAP Certificate in Electrical Engineering to show from GTHS Bamenda. His field career started in the Monastery in Mbengwi where he was in charge of electrical works and the manufacturer of incubators for chickens. Wisdom from Kelvin Rodney, a Monk in the monastery from Ireland inspired Aghangu to try his hand in the manufacture of an incubator for babies. His sole ambition is to serve mankind through his work.

Emerged with the best prize in the art during the February 2007 Scientific and Technological week organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs in Yaoundé, but regrets that the prize for such creative efforts was CFA 5000 and two T- shirts. This however, did not dampened his ambition to forge ahead. That is what inspired him to produce more incubators and offer to the Bamenda Provincial Hospital. His creative mind is also inspiring him towards trying a hand in the production of a new television brand and a solar mosquito lantern.

So far he feels neglected and discouraged by the absence of sponsors. Hope, he says is still very much around his commitment to reach the hall of fame someday with his creative ability. And, while waiting and hoping, Aghangu is at the service of St Maria Gorettis Comprehensive College Njinikom as a teacher, husband and father of one.

I am so delighted to know that despite all odds, there are some briliant minds out there like Aghangu trynig to start something that may become great and creat jobs for many. This was an opportunity that government would have magnified by providing incentives that would help him start a business. I am not suprise by the type of econonic policies our governments in Africa adopt. By, Erasmos U.S.A.

I was like him teaching in a Secondary School and developing my vision for sustainable agriculture in the North Central Nigeria. I started by voluntary advisory services to resource-poor farmers-that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Today I am building on this vision here in the UK via scholarship.I am leaving UK back to Nigeria by October this year.
