Kampala — EIGHTEEN national cricket team players have been distributed in groups of three to each of the six teams that will take part in the inaugural NCR Twenty20 cricket tournament this weekend. The event that will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Lugogo and Kyambogo cricket ovals will be played in two groups from which the two top teams will contest the final.
The organisers made it a point to give each team three Ugandan internationals as a balancing act of strength among the six sides to create excitement.
Teams can fill the rest of their lineups with any players of their choice provided they do not play for any national team.
Event organisers, spearheaded by former Uganda Cricket Association treasurer Sanjiv Patel, successfully attracted sponsorship for all teams from Warid Telecom, MTN, Highland Water, Sleeping Baby and a consortium of British companies. Consequently, each team will don T-shirts and trousers branded with their sponsor's logo.
In order to fit in many games in two days, organisers have decided to have all group matches played in 15 overs with only the final in the 20 overs format.
All individual and team winners will share a sh5m prize. There will be prizes for the player who plunders the most number of 6s, best bowler and batsman, men of the matches, and man of the series.
The tournament will also provide more off-pitch fun with a kids corner and other forms of entertainment during and after the matches.
+National team bowler Charles Waisswa picked another crucial wicket but his club Killarmarsh in England still failed to get their first win in the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board Premier League on Saturday, reports Norman Katende.
Waisswa clean bowled Plumtree's top scorer Jake Habberfield for 52 as Killarmarsh were set a target of 201. The wicket was his 12th in seven games.
Adam Burgess hit 52 before Waisswa, the club's second top scorer in that game was run out at 24 runs. Killarmarsh fell 14 runs short of their target, after managing 187 for eight in 50 overs.
Killarmarsh are now seventh of the 12 league table. They have drawn two and lost five of seven games.
