Nigeria: Edo Speaker Kicks Against Constitutional Amendment

Lagos — SPEAKER of Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Zakawanu Garuba, has kicked against the proposed constitutional amendment, saying that it would create fresh tension in the country particularly in the Niger Delta.

He argued that it was too early to amend the constitution since the nation had only witnessed nine years of democracy, suggesting that the National Assembly and the Executive should identify the problematic areas and strengthen them rather than embarking on an entire constitutional amendment which according to him would aggravate the prevailing crisis in the Niger Delta and other areas.
