Ndola — POLICE in Livingstone have apprehended a Zambian for harbouring more than 30 suspected illegal Zimbabwean immigrants at his home where he was charging them lodging fees.
Southern Province police commanding officer, Lemmy Kajoba confirmed the incident in an interview.
He identified the Zambian as Peter Daka who was picked up after being found with 32 Zimbabweans at his house.
Mr Kajoba said police unearthed the scam in the process of pursuing two foreigners who allegedly murdered a Livingstone hairdresser last week.
The two foreign nationals were suspected to have killed Philemon Phiri at the weekend in Maramba township and got away with his two cell phones.
Mr Kajoba said in the process of pursuing the duo, police caught up with them at Daka's place in 217 area where they also found several Zimbabweans.
He said Daka was charging K2,000 for Zimbabweans sleeping on the verandah of his house and K5,000 for those squeezing in the house.
Mr Kajoba said that Daka, who is also a mechanic, was charging between K1,000 and K2,000 for people to sleep in his disused vehicles and garage in his yard.
The 32 people found at Daka's home were handed over to the immigration department for further screening.
