VICE-PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has thanked Egypt for donating towards flood victims in Zambia, saying the gesture would help minimise their suffering.

Mr Banda said in Lusaka yesterday that it was important that various stakeholders continued rendering assistance to the numerous people that were affected by the floods during the last rain season.

The Vice-President said this when he received blankets and tents donated by the Egyptian Embassy to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

Mr Banda said that donations such as the one from Egypt would greatly contribute in minimising the after effects of the floods and even prepare for future eventualities.

The donation from the Egyptians, Mr Banda said was testimony of the friendship between that country and Zambia.

"I know that the land of the Pharaohs is a driving force in the Common Market for the Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and let alone the African Union (AU) . We all know Egyptian exploits in African continental football and we hail our Egyptian friends," Mr Banda said.

Speaking earlier, Egyptian ambassador to Zambia Sherif Kamal Shaheen said that his government was concerned with the effects of the floods hence the decision to make a donation of 1,090 blankets and 54 tents.

Mr Shaheen said the donation was an indication of the existing friendship with Zambia.

"We decided to make the donation so that we can help our brothers and sisters in Zambia. This is a significant moment which indicates brotherly relations between Zambia and Egypt," he said.
