Nigeria: ICPC Inaugurates Media Network Against Corruption

In recognition of the role of the media role as a veritable and reliable partner in the quest to enthrone a national culture of integrity, transparency and accountability in the country, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has inaugurated the media chapter of National Anti- Corruption Volunteers Corps (NAVC) tagged Media Network against Corruption.

In a statement issued by the Public Enlightenment department, the head, Mr Mike Sowe, stated that the event was held at the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

According to the statement, the ICPC resident consultant in charge of media and event, Mr. Folu Olamiti, who is also the National Coordinator of NAVC,told the gathering that the active involvement of journalists in the war against graft is crucial to the success of the campaign.

He, however, added that the Chairman of the Commission, Justice E.O. Ayoola, on assumption of office in 2005, sought the cooperation of the media by consulting with the media executives in Lagos because of his belief that their involvement in the crusade was very important.

Chief Oguntimehin, who represented the chairman at the occasion, stated that the inauguration was to stop corruption in Nigeria. He further stated that the masses also had a responsibility to join hands with the ICPC to fight corruption in the country.

Media Network against Corruption is the Journalists' Wing of NAVC in Oyo State which is aimed, among others, at cultivating a crop of journalists who are genuinely committed to wage war against corruption through the media, and also to serve as a vanguard for adequate sensitisation of the public about corruption.
