Harare — Harare-based Gwarimba and the pride of Victoria Falls - Koomboka Band, will represent the country in the Music Crossroads Inter-regional finals slated for Malawi in August after they were crowned winners for the Zimbabwe chapter in the capital over the weekend.

The two winning groups could not hide their elation after they shrugged off the stiff competition to book their place in the money-spinning inter-regional finals.

Koomboka's Costa Moyo said: "We feel humbled for having succeeded at this level of competition where other groups proved their mettle. "However, it's not over yet until we go to Malawi. From here, we are going to be more serious with rehearsals and we would like to put into practice all that we learnt during the festival," she said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Gwarimba members who described their triumph as a "step in the right direction" adding that they had been waiting for this to happen. African Destiny, a Gweru-based Afro-jazz outfit which was tipped to go far in the talent search programme, narrowly lost to Gwarimba and Koomboka who were jointly crowned winners.

However, African Destiny might travel to Malawi as Music Crossroads for the Zimbabwe chapter intends to lobby Music Crossroads International to increase the number of participants to three per each country. Other groups that fared very well at the national finals include Gweru-based Soul Panorama. Blessed Assurance and Taku & True Bantu - dawn from Harare and Chitungwiza respectively - had a good day in office although they could not make it to the regional finals.

Other bands worth mentioning include Norton-based sungura outfit Iron Stars and The Paradiers from Mashonaland Central. Mutare-based Dapurahunanzva also fared well at the competition. Show co-ordinator Mathius Bangure said this year's competition lived to its name. "Everything went according to script. The level of competition is becoming finer and popular with the passing of each year.
