Uganda: Lutaaya to Launch New Album in Style

Kampala — THE last time we heard Lutaaya was two-and-a half-years ago when he released his Easy Come, Easy Go album, a track in which he warned men to guard against women who fall in love with them the first day they meet.

Earlier this year, he released Omukisa Gwa Munno, his latest six-track album. The album spawned two moderate hits Nice and Lovely and the title track, Omukisa Gwa Munno. A couple of months later, Lutaaya is set to launch the album in three concerts.

The first launch will be held at Hotel Africana on Friday, June 20 for sh30,000 (VIP) and sh20,000 (general seating). The second will take place on Saturday, June 21 at Patel Shamji Hall, Masaka for sh20,000 (VIP) and sh10,000 (general seating), while the third is slated for Sunday, June 22 at Ggaba Beach, Kampala for sh5,000.

To open for Geoffrey Lutaaya will be a myriad of locally-respected singers like Gospel music maestro Pastor Wilson Bugembe; Female artiste of the year, Sophia Nantogo, David "Kapapala" Lutalo, Dream Galz, Eddy Yawe, Silver Kyagulanyi, Mathias Walukagga and The Obsessions. Eagles Productions Band will also be at hand to help out one of their own.

Each of the six tracks on Omukisa Gwa Munno, right from the title track Tonkyawanga, Nice and Lovely, Sweet Heart, Natagambwangako and Mazze Okulonda can stand on its own feet as a hit.

And all the songs are a typical Geoffrey Lutaaya - melodious with hooks and grooves that blur the lines between Congolese rumba and reggae. Thrown in the chatter of guitars, horns (by Tony Kalanzi) are 'creepy' keyboards.

Although Nice and Lovely was released first and seemed to have captured the public's interest, the socially-conscious Omukisa Gwa Munno, which is driven by a synthentic bass line that is a cross between reggae and rumba, speaks to us best.

The song draws our attention to virtues of working hard and not casting an envious glance at those who have 'made it' to the top.

As Lutaaya says: "My intention was to release music that is able to stand on it own feet. I do not want to cheat my fans by releasing an album with one hit."

Well, only time can prove otherwise.
