Somalia: Iman - Truly African, Truly Beautiful

opinion

Who was born in Somalia 52 years ago, is married to a rock star, is owner of a world famous beauty company and also spokesperson for the Keep A Child Alive programme? Iman of course! Today she is Iman, the iconic model who bowled David Bowie over. In 1975, she was a mere recruit discovered by famous American photographer Peter Beard.

Iman was born on the 25th of July to Mohamed Abdulmajid, former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Marion. She had a high school education in Egypt and from there, she proceeded to the University of Nairobi, Kenya where she earned a bachelor degree in Political Science. She speaks five languages including English, Arabic, French and her native Somali. What a woman!

In 1977, she married Spencer Haywood, an American basketball player. Their marriage lasted ten years. They have a daughter, Zulekha Haywood who was born in 1978. Five years after her divorce from Haywood, Iman took another leap of faith and walked down the aisle with music icon, David Bowie. On August the 15th 2000, their daughter Alexandria Zahra was born.

Iman's modelling career took off with Vogue, the famous fashion magazine in 1976, after relocating from Somalia a year earlier. Iman has appeared in an handful of movies and has been a guest star on a number of TV shows. She played Martia in the 1991 hit movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. She was also in the Oscar-winning movie, Out of Africa. She has appeared on hit fashion shows- Project Runway and America's Next Top Model. She can also be spotted in Michael Jackson's Remember The Time music video, alongside movie veteran Eddie Murphy.

In May 2007, she launched her company, Iman Global Chic. She is the CEO of Iman Cosmetics, Skincare & Fragrances, targeted at "women of colour", black women that is.

She is also one of the faces of the Keep A Child Alive programme, which provides drugs for children and families living with HIV/AIDS in Africa and other developing countries.

Iman is the ideal woman- intelligent, beautiful and full of empathy. Atta Girl!
