Kenya: Help Us, Refugees Ask Kibaki And Raila

7 June 2008

Nairobi — President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have been urged to order for the repatriation of 210 internal refugees based at the Malaba refugee camp in Teso District.

The refugees said they are appealing to the two principals because the area provincial administration has failed to transport them back to their homes after their return to Kenya from Mulanda refugee camp in Tororo, Uganda.

Speaking to the Nation at their Malaba camp, the refugees said that the administration's promises to move them were not bearing fruit.

They said although Teso DC Johnson Mwirigi had told them that they will be moved by Wednesday this week, nothing was forthcoming.

"We want the Government to move us out of this camp because we are suffering," they said.

A Mr Kisika, a pastor, said the refugees had been forced to sell part of their relief food in order to buy other essential goods like cooking fat, paraffin and vegetables.

"They don't give us any cash to buy other commodities, leading us to sell some of our relief supplies," the pastor said.

The refugees appealed to the UNHCR to give them the money they had been promised when they came back from Uganda.

They said a form, which they had filled out while they were in Uganda, was handed over to the officer in charge at Malaba.

At the same time, parents at Malaba primary school want the displaced people moved because they fear they will fill up the school's latrines.

"We want them moved because they have caused a lot of problems in our school," they said.
