Liberia: Nigerian Unmil Contingent Received Vehicles

6 June 2008

The Nigerian Contingent (NIGCON), serving in United Nations Missions in Liberia (UNMIL), has received the first batch of operational vehicles from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The vehicles were five heavy duty trucks and three Nissan Patrol jeeps.

This is part of the efforts by the Nigerian Government towards improving the operational readiness of troops in the Mission areas. As could be recalled, the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lt/Gen. Luka Nyeh Yusuf had earlier pledged to improve the welfare and operational equipment of Nigerian troops during his last visit to NIGCON UNMIL early this year.

Africa Motors here in Liberia delivered the vehicles to the Commander Sector 1/Nigerian Contingent Brig/Gen. Ezekiel Olu Olofinmuagun at the Headquarters, Sector 1 JSP Airfield in Sinkor-Monrovia yesterday. The next batch is expected to be delivered as soon as possible.

In a related development the Sector 1 Nigerian Contingent (NIGCON) and Civil Affairs Department of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), in conjunction with Montserrado County recently carried out a Medical Outreach programme at White Plains Town in Montserrado County. The Medical team comprised of eight medical personnel from Sector 1/NIGCON UNMIL and 2 County Health Officers of Montserrado County.

The programme was part of the humanitarian efforts of Sector 1/NIGCON UNMIL Peace building and Recovery activities aimed at making comfortable life for the Liberians within Sector 1 Area of responsibility. The initiative had a tremendous boost from the Nigerian Government as Sector 1 had just taken delivery of drugs from Nigeria. More than 3,000 patients from White Plains Town and its environs benefited from this exercise.

Speaking at the occasion, the Commander Sector, the Commander Sector 1/NIGCON UNMIL, Brigadier General Ezekiel Olu Olofinmuagun observed that he was happy to render such services to humanity. The NIGCON Commander also observed that the exercise is going to be a continuous one as the next Medical Outreach would be carried out at Margibi County very soon.

The Commissioner of White Plains Town, Wilson Kanasuah, commended the Nigerian Contingent and indeed the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the support and cooperation in creating such an initiative to make Liberians hopeful.
