Somalia: Insurgents Attack Police Station, Commissioner's Home

10 June 2008

Somali rebels attacked a police station in the capital Mogadishu Tuesday evening, less than a day after a United Nations-sponsored peace agreement was signed between the government and its opposition.

Heavily-armed insurgents attacked the police station in Kaaraan, as well as the home of District Commissioner Abdullahi Mohamed Roble.

The fighting sparked around 6pm local time and lasted for nearly an hour, with residents reported the sounds of gunfire across Mogadishu. Police units and Mr. Roble's armed guards were overpowered and routed out of their buildings, witnesses said.

The insurgents briefly seized control of both the Kaaraan police station and the home of District Commissioner Roble.

Casualties could not be immediately verified.

The district of Kaaraan has been one of Mogadishu's most peaceful areas since a bloody insurgency erupted in the capital 17 months ago. Locals said it is the first time the Commissioner's home and the police station have been attacked.
