Uganda: Cranes Sorry for Benin Debacle

Kampala — Cranes players have apologised for the disastrous 1-4 loss to Benin in last Sunday's African Nations Cup qualifier in Cotonou.

The players arrived in the country yesterday morning and their apology was delivered by Fufa President Lawrence Mulindwa.

"The players have asked me to apologise to Ugandans most especially the government, the fans and all the well wishers and promised to make amends when they host Angola on Saturday," said Mulindwa.

The Cranes face Angola on Saturday. The Palancas Negras have maximum points from two games, having beaten Benin 3-0 and Niger 2-1 in their last two games.

Angola have concerns over the fitness of striker Flavio and winger Gilberto. Mulindwa said that the allegations that players were mistreated in Benin are false and aimed at giving the Cranes and Fufa a bad image.

"The Benin FA gave us a good hotel and the players refused it. It's the standard of Regency Hotel (Kampala), but unfortunately the players refused to sleep in it," Mulindwa said.

He also refuted earlier reports that the players were not paid their allowances. He confirmed that each player received a total of $1,600 or Shs2.7m.

"It's a big shame that there are some elements who are going around misinforming the public. The players got their money at the right time and coach (Laszlo) Csaba's salary comes on time," Mulindwa told the weekly Fufa press conference.

He blamed sections of the press for undermining his administration.
