Lagos — The Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) would hold its 22nd National ConferenceAnnual General Meeting (AGM) and 30th Anniversary at Abeokuta, Ogun State, from June 24-27 .
Speaking at a press conference recently in Lagos at its office, the President, NCS, Prof. Charles Uwadia, said that this year's conference is a departure from the previous ones because of innovations attached to it . As part of this new package, reviewers of papers for presentation are not only from the tertiary institutions but from banking and Finance, oil and Gas, Industrial (ICONS) and other sectors.
We would give lecture on history of Infotech, how it has revolved in our country and conduct induction of our new members.The theme of the 2008 conference "Enabling Capacity of information Technology (IT) for Sustainable National Development (ENCITDEV) 2008)" intends to attract the involvement and participation of stakeholders who proffer solution to what hinders 'IT' growth and encourage Nigerian Industrialist to consult with the NCS and together chart the way out to establish confidence in the services and manpower of Nigerian Market.
He said that the BankingFinance Industry should be convinced of home (Nigerian) potential in the provision of manpower in the software development and maintenance in their software need. NCS should also be in the best position to discourage high-level patronage of foreign countries, we should be allowed to develop and grow in IT.
The theme for this year's conference was thoughtfully selected to inform Nigerian Government-Federal, State and Non-Governmental organisations and the stake holders-that NCS has the technical know-how and the professional pride and competence that would make Nigerian achieve her visions, he stressed. "We are happy that Nigeria is no longer dreaming of a project but rather a vision.At the moment, the task ahead of IT professionals Information Technology (Industry) of Nigeria (ITAN), Institute of software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Internet Service Providers Association of Nigeria (ISPAN), the National Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS) our tertiary institutions, future leaders and indeed, our sister organisation, the computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) is for all of us put together the achievement of the 2020 vision of making Nigeria one of the 20 world economies, Uwadia stressed.
According to him, the Chief Executive Officers' (CEOs) forum recently introduced into the 2008 conference shall avail itself of connecting the policy makers and get them conceived that there is sufficient manpower to handle IT needs in Nigeria.
In line with Nigerian Government vision on 2020, it is imperative that bandwidth cast be a major component to be addressed with the launch of the NIGCOMSAT. It is envisaged that the deployment from the NIGCOMSAT will reduce, drastically the cost inherent in the use of VSAT and the related bandwidth. Therefore, the role or relevance of NIGCOMSAT cannot be undermined. "NCS would like to see them in deployment of signal for browsing easily while on the Internet across the 774 local government areas of Nigerians with the launch of satellite," he said . In benefit, Uwadia, said membership of NCS confers members' professional qualifications for career development and advancement. "It confers the rights and privileged of being recommended for jobs, contract and other services both locally and internationally.
It ensures that members interest are well protected in work place and in other endeavour in the society at large through the promotion of good policies, governance and best practices by government and the employers of labour".
