Ghana: NYEP Must Consider Cultural

Sebastian R. Freiku, Kumasi

12 June 2008

Mr. S. F. Adjei, Director of the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Kumasi, has called on the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, to draw up programmes, and involve all relevant agencies in the promotion of national culture.

The move, he noted, would help the Ghanaian to discover his identity, and assert his role in speedy national development. "Ghana would be nowhere without culture and chieftaincy," he said.

Adjei disregarded the over-reliance on cocoa and gold, and emphasized the enormous contribution culture could play in the growth of the economy, through tourism.

He advised that such programmes must border on all aspects of tradition, customary practices, and usage and system of governance, to boost economic activities.

The Director suggested the consideration of the National Youth Employment Programme to look at promoting culture, to make the promotion total.

He called for the creation of a module, which would involve the youth in the promotion of cultural values, towards the realization of the potentials of the African.

He noted that trained personnel under this proposed module of the programme could be sent out to the districts, to liaise with District Assemblies and public institutions, promote cultural values, and revive festivals in the traditional areas.

Mr. Adjei disclosed, in an interview with The Chronicle, that his outfit was seriously negotiating with the National Commission on Culture (NCC), and the Kwame Nkrumah of Science and Technology (KNUST), which has introduced the study of Culture and Tourism in their curriculum, to promote cultural studies in tertiary institutions.

He said it was about time Ghanaians became part of the story-telling, in our own way, to the outside world, instead of depending on foreigners, or outsiders to tell our story for us.

Director Adjei assured that the CNC, on its part, would soon activate social and educational programmes at the centre, for the general public.

The centre is currently engaging students from various tertiary institutions on attachment, in a bid to train them to function as promoters, and help develop culture.
