Monrovia — The U.S. Peace Corps volunteer program which provided services to the Liberian people long before the civil crisis erupted is back in the country with the presence of several Peace Corps volunteers.
However, the group will not begin official work now until September, U.S. Ambassador Donald Booth announced Monday.
Speaking at a reception to formally introduce the new Peace Corps Director Lucianne Philips, Mr. Booth said he has been pushing for the return of the Peace Corps more than two years ago.
He said the Peace Corps program, like the past, will focus on education including the rural teachers' training institutes.
Amb. Booth said he was glad to have the Peace Corps back because they have an important role in the building of Liberia.
In brief remarks, Peace Corps Director Lucianne Philips said she was happy to be back in the country, and praised the Liberian people for their appreciation.
She said although they are back, but the Peace Corps intend to begin with a small and experienced staff. Madam Philips told the gathering that she has already begun working with certain agencies of government to see what direction to take.
