Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki met and held talks at the Denden Hall in the morning hours today with the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Mr. Louis Michel. During the meeting, both sides held extensive talks in regards issues of bilateral relations and regional affairs.
Pointing out Eritrea's willingness to work with the European Union in efforts to ensure regional peace and development in the Horn region, President Isaias Afwerki reassured Eritrea's cooperation with the Union so long as the partnership to be established is based on equality and mutual benefit.
Highlighting the need for Eritrea and the European Union to discuss on issues of principles and that Eritrea supports the strategy of creating joint trade opportunities with the separate regions of Africa, President Isaias emphasized that peace in all regions of the continent is vital for the practicality of the undertaking.
Emphasizing that the problems that transpire in this region are all fabricated and are instigated by the intervention of the US, the President elaborated that it is impossible for peace to prevail in this region so long as the intervention persists. President Isaias underlined that Eritrea will by no means fall in the trap set by these fabricated problems.
Pointing out that Eritrea had a major role to play in the reawakening of IGAD for ensuring peace and development in the region, the President highlighted that the organization is at present paralyzed through the intervention of various sides.
In regards to the problems in Somalia, President Isaias Afwerki said that Eritrea's position in the matter remains that Somalis be left by themselves to work on their affairs without any intervention and that the International Community should support Somalis by creating a viable platform for the effort.
Underlining that his visit marks talks with President Isaias Afwerki in the strategy of supporting Africa to merge with the World trade, Mr. Louis Michel on his part called for the continuance of Eritrea's support in regards the matter.
