Nigeria: Country Wins Islamic Competition in Iran

Lagos — Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON, Mallam Abubakar Jijiwa has described the performance of the three staff of the organisation, who participated at the just concluded Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting annual festival, in Tehran, Iran as a confirmation of the abundance of talents in VON.

He said the management of the organisation would continue to motivate staff with incentives to enhance their professionalism and career advancement.

He said for broadcasters to excel, they need an environment of freedom, because it is only in a free environment that individuals can unleash their creative potentials, adding that broadcasting professionals must always be availed training opportunities and exposure to high standards in content and technical quality.

The three staff had performed very well in three categories of the competition, where they won gold, silver and third place respectively.

VON entered the competition with entries from the quartet of Mujeedah Abdul-Aleem, Tajudeen Adebayo, Sola Solanke and Patience Okon in Women, Religious and Youth categories.

VON's Asia - Pacific region correspondent, Abdul Warees Solanke reports from Bandar Seri Begawan that Mujeedah Abdul-Aleem's entry, African Integration was adjudged the best in the women's category, winning for Nigeria a gold medal and a cash prize of 2000 Euros. Tajudeen Adebayo emerged the second best in the religious category to win a silver medal and 1500 euros for the country while Sola Solanke's entry, youth Forum which came third received an acclaim from the panel of judges for its relevance and technical quality.At the same festival last year, Tajudeen Adebayo's entry on the Holy Prophet was adjudged the best to win for Nigeria a gold medal and cash prize of 2000 euros.

He said for broadcasters to excel, they need an environment of freedom, because it is only in a free environment that individuals can unleash their creative potentials, adding that broadcasting professionals must always be availed training opportunities and exposure to high standards in content and technical quality.Mallam Jijiwa hinted that the VON management was committed to upgrading the VON Training to an international centre of broadcast excellence through international linkages and partnerships, just as he said that Voice of Nigeria's global reach is being strengthened with a new transmitting station nearing completion in Abuja.

According to him, clean global reception of the station's signal would further encourage and challenge VON staff to be more productive, creative and professional in 'winning and sustaining the respect and goodwill of listeners worldwide , particularly Nigerians and Africans in the Diaspora, making Nigeria's voice to be heard more positively in the shaping of our world'.

This he said is because they would become more conscious that they are competing with other powerful international broadcasters.

Executive Director (Programme), Alhaji Kabir Ahmed Muhammed, who led VON delegation to the Iran Festival expressed happiness that VON is consolidating its position as "the international radio broadcasting station of first choice for anyone genuinely interested in Nigeria and Africa.Following their impressive performance in the last year's Edition of the competition, the VON management rewarded the two nominees Tajudeen Adebayo and Mikhail Abdulazeez with accelerated promotion motivation.
