Nigeria: Nwosu's Beautiful Nonsense

Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, on Thursday in Abuja presented to the public his book which he claimed captured what happened during the annulled 1993 presidential election.

The 392-page book entitled Laying the Foundation for Nigeria's Democracy: My Account of 12 June 1993 Presidential Election and its Annulment launch was to mark the 15th anniversary of the contentious June 12 election.

Nwosu declared that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the presidential race against his opponent Alhaji Bashir Tofa. Nwosu told guests that he could not announce the results then because an Abuja High Court restrained him.

Curiously, he would not speak only for NEC he was in charge of. He said former President Ibrahim Babangida showed "strong political will" for the success of the transition, but a strong cabal was a wedge. Apparently, Nwosu was more interested in absolving Babangida of blame than anything else.

Before the launch, Nigerians had expressed fears that Nwosu might only come after a 15-year hibernation to rewrite history.

And truly, what he did only raised more questions. It was obvious to Nigerians that the then military President Babangida was hardly interested in leaving office. So how would he have wanted a successful election?

Talking about court order, Nwosu said the government was interested in observing the rule of law. But was the election ruling the only item on the table for abidance? Did the government not flout many other court orders?

Nwosu has clearly misfired. His book has not said anything not already known, really, and it might only be a beautiful nonsense.

Nigerians say since he had been so much a coward to speak in the past 15 years, he should as well forever hold his peace.
