Abuja — International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), FCT branch, on Friday donated the sum of one hundred thousand naira and food items to children of St Mary's Orphanage, a pet project established by sisters of the needy congregation at the Arch Diocese of Abuja.
Chairperson of the FCT FIDA, Mrs. Chinelo Ireiele, said this kind gesture was part of the association's welfare committee to the less priviged in the country even as their visit was part of the activities of the organisation which is basically aimed at uplifting the lives of women and children in the society.
She said "We are impressed with the work you are doing and the sacrifices you have been making to make these children have hope.We are prepared to partner with you in any way we could and we are ready to render assistance whenever we are called upon to do so'.
Ireele commended the congregation over their acts of kindness and charged the well to do in society, corporate organisations and the government to come to the aid of the needy in the society.
Also speaking at the occassion, Secretary of the FIDA Abuja welfare Committee, Odera Ozobialu, who presented the cash gift of a hundred thousand naira and the food items stated that the visit was apart of the activities of the committee which she said was charged with the responsibility of providing for the needy in society in line with the objectives of FIDA.
Earlier, the leader of the orphanage, sister Josephine, thanked the members of FIDA for their visit and stated that the home had a total of 51 children who she said were either picked up where they were abandoned or as a result of the death of their parents.
According to her "we want to thank FIDA for the generoisity and thoughtfulness towards the welfare of the less privileged in the society, and we are using this medium to call on all other associations, well to do Nigerians and corporate organisations to also come to our aid.
"We have here presently 51 children, the oldest is 17 years old and all the children are presently in school and we intend to God willing, ensure that they all get qualitative education up to the university level and all these cost money" she added.
Josephine noted that "all the children here have roots but most of them were admitted here due to lack of parental care or the death of their parents, we are resolved to giving the best education so that they can become useful citizens in future.
"We are calling on individuals corporate bodies and associations to come to our aid and save us from the menace of erosion, we would also appreciate social visits by families as the children at times feel left out, all these visits make them have a sense of belonging" she added.
