Windhoek — THE Namibia Domestic and Allied Worker's Union (Ndawu) will soon ask Government to introduce a minimum wage for domestic and general workers in the country.

General Secretary Alfred Angula said in Windhoek last week that those who employ domestic workers "must start adjusting wages and give benefits to their employees before it is too late".

Angula said the union had commissioned the Labour Resource and Research Institute to do a survey on what the minimum wages should be.

He said escalating food and fuel prices were hitting lowest-paid workers hard.

He singled out those working for Chinese businesses.

"They work odd hours and get very little pay without due regard to the high cost of living.

The Chinese shops must be inspected and must comply with the rules and regulations of Namibia," said Angula.

He said the union was aware of people in the lowest pay grades, especially domestic workers, who had lost their homes because of non-payment of bills.

"Their salaries are not enough to sustain any of their essential basic needs," Angula argued.
