Nigeria: Mother of All Strike On the Way, Enugu NUT Boss Warns

Enugu — THE Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to embark on a major strike which has been tagged "mother of all strikes" as a follow up to the first phase of the strike that affected the NECO examinations across the country.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Enugu State Chapter, Dr Uche Agboeze who disclosed this while speaking with reporters in Enugu at the weekend, said as from next week, the country would see what he called the "mother of all strikes" which might bring the government to its knees.

"We are happy that our strike has stopped NECO examinations nationwide. As from next week, you will begin to see the mother of all strikes," Agboeze warned, insisting that the teachers' demands were quite legitimate.

Teachers in the country embarked on a three-day warning strike to press their demands for the implementation of Teachers Salary Structure (TSS) specifically for teachers in the primary and post-primary schools across the nation. The struggle for the new salary structure has been more than a decade old, according to Agboeze, who added that President Musa Yar'adua's government's refusal to implement the new salary structure for teachers was quite unfair.

"In some countries, teachers are paid higher than other workers because of the nature of their work," he said, noting that although people think the teachers' strike was driven by selfishness on the part of the teachers, but he maintained that it was proper and lawful for teachers who.
