Nigeria: Yar'Adua Opens World Desertification Summit in Bauchi Today

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua will lead a high-powered government delegation and other environmental stakeholders, including 19 northern state governors, nine ministers, legislators, members of the diplomatic community and others to this years World Desertification Summit holding in Bauchi state today.

President Yar'Adua who is the Guest of Honour, is expected to declare open the two-day summit while the Senate President, David Mark, will chair the deliberations at the summit's first day. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole, is also expected to chair the closing ceremony.

This was made know in a statement made available to Daily Trust, signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Isa Yuguda on Housing and Environment, Alhaji Yakubu Jibrin. According to him, President Yar'Adua will flag-off the 2008 Tree Planting Campaign at Tirwun Village , a distance of seven kilometers from Bauchi. He further said that the technical session for the two days will feature presentation of papers and deliberations from experts and stakeholders in the environmental sector.

The essence of the summit, according to Alhaji Yakubu, is to ascertain the extent of desert encroach-ment in the region and fashion out ways to combat the environmental problem.

In the meantime, Governor Yuguda has been commended for his efforts to improve the environmental situation in the state.

Making the commen-dation during an inspection of desert affected areas in the Katagum local government, Alhaji Jibrin said that the Bauchi state governor has almost concluded arrangements with the federal government to construct a green area in the northern parts of the state as part of the measures to control soil erosion.

According to him, Governor Yuguda will re-introduce the yearly tree-planting campaign which was stopped by the immediate past administration to check desert encroachment. Alhaji Jibrin further said that tree-seedlings of different species will be purchased and distributed to the people as it was in the case during the era of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the former premier of northern region.
