Gambia: Speaker to Observe Zimbabwe Election

17 June 2008

At the special invitation of the chairperson of the African union Commission, the speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Fatoumata Jahumpa-Ceesay, will fly to Harare, Zimbabwe, to observe the forthcoming election run-off on June 27.

According to reports monitored by the Daily Observer, Speaker Juhumpa-Ceesay will be accompanied by four other members of the National Assembly, comprising Hon Mama Kandeh of Jimara, Hon Abdoulie Kanagi Jawla of Sandu, Hon Bintanding Jarju of Foni Berefet and Hon Alagie Sillah of Banjul North Constituencies.

This is not the first time that the speaker has been invited to observe the elections, as she had successfully served in similar capacities in Nigeria and Liberia.

The battle for power in Zimbabwe is between President Robert Mugabe of the ruling ZANU-PF and the beleaguered Morgan Tchangarai of the opposition MDC.
