Lagos — Governors in the 19 northern states say they will establish thermal power plants in the region using coal and natural gas deposits in the area.

They said that they are endowed with huge coal and natural gas deposits suitable for power generation.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by its technical committee on power generation at the end of a two-day summit in Kaduna yesterday.

The governors however asked the Federal Government to complete the Ajaokuta, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano and Katsina gas supply projects.

The communiquéé was signed by the committee's chairman and the Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Mohammed Namadi Sambo.

It noted the readiness of financial institutions to fund power generation projects in the north.

"All northern governors have been called upon to identify with the principles and ideals of public-private-partnership because it is only through such collaborations that this noble venture and other infrastructural development can be accelerated, to empower and improve the living standard of the people.

"The summit observed that power related courses were lacking in most state owned universities in the north. To this end, the summit urged for the promotion of science education in the north and for our institutions to prevail on their state governments with a view to introducing energy related courses aimed at building capacities and development of skills in the power sector," the communiqué stated.
